350.org alarmism vs critical thinking

There are some bold claims being made by the climate change activists to support their agenda to get us all to reduce our carbon emissions. Top of the list for alarmism is 350.org who's simple goal is to 'stop fossil fuels and build 100% renewables'.

Of course, anyone who takes more than 5 minutes to critically think about these goals will realise that they are not only impractical - they don't provide a solution to their stated problem, that rising, man-made, CO2 is causing global temperatures to rise with the concommitant problems of extreme heat, ocean acidification, storms, rising sea levels and destruction of natural habitats, but they are also expensive and ill thought through.

Renewals are inherently unreliable. At best, wind and sun are intermittent sources of power in most parts of the world and bulk power storage with batteries is prohibitively expensive and comes with its own environmental issues.

What about biomass, one of 350.org's favourite little solutions? Again, it just takes a few minutes to realise that these are at least, if not more, environmentally dirty than coal and lead solutions to be implemented that are not in the best interest of the planet or humans.

Just look at the nonsense over at the Drax powerstation in Yorkshire - Over £100 million spent on converting it from coal power (which was readily available a few miles down the road) to biomass (chipped wood from trees), which is now shipped in from the USA. The operators say that it saves around 1 million tonnes of CO2 a year in reduced emissions, but this is only as it doesn't need to be measured as biomass is a 'renewable' source of energy. The fact is that burning biomass results in more CO2 per tonne burnt than coal.

A blind focus on the wrong problem to solve leads to crazy implementations like Drax. Coal, in particular, is a relatively cheap and readily available source of dense energy, making it ideal for electrical power generation. This is why it's the first choice source for China and India and why they are investing heavily on building new coal plants.

If the west fails to realise the folly behind 350.orgs idealism with regards power generation, they'll end up with expensive and unreliable power solutions. The world needs reliable bulk load electricity generated from coal, gas and nuclear power plants. Especially Nuclear.

It doesn't take a lot of critical thinking to realise this.
